Well
I did it. I swapped in new (to me)
used (from a 1976 Bronco) rebuilt (after 25 years they needed it) axles. I also did a
spring over lift at the same time. The axle is a Dana 44 in the front with a Lock right. The rear is a Ford 9". It also has a Lock right and 28 spine axles. I plan to change it as money allows. I had a Lock right in my Dana 35c and it worked wonderful. In the 9" it is a piece of crap. It is noisy and harsh. It will work until I get some $$$$$$ for 31 spine axles, Detroit locker, new gears. The gears are 3.73s. I would like to go with 4.11s. The spring over swap is straight forward. Chris Waterman did a very good page on it. He and I also exchanged a ton of email before and during the job. He was very helpful. Two things that I don't like about the SOA swap is the draglink hits the spring. I am working on spring over steering now. And I have a 3" body lift to clear my transmission. I am looking to cut it down to 1.5 inches. I love it on the trail. With 35" tires, gobs of clearance under the Jeep, and all that flex There is nothing stopping me now. On the road it is not fun to drive. I have no track arms or sway bars. You want to talk about bump steer. I am glad that I don't have to drive it much on the road. TECH: Front Shocks: Rancho 5012 Rear Shocks: Rancho 5010 Front Drive Shaft: 38" long. It is a stock YJ shaft cut down. Rear Drive Shaft: 23" long. I had Tom Woods Drive Shafts make it. Springs: I used the two main leafs from the 2.5" Rancho spring packs and the helper springs from YJ pack.
